Purpura fulminans (PF )
Rare, life-threatening condition characterized by rapidly progressive purpura and DIC, leading to tissue necrosis and potential organ damage, MODS and death due to thrombotic complications.

2. Causes?

a) Infections: Gram-neg bacteria (e.g., meningococcus), Gram-pos bacteria (streptococci), and viruses (e.g., varicella-zoster, measles).
b) Inherited deficiencies: Congenital deficiencies in protein C or S can cause neonatal PF.
c) Autoimmune disorders: Idiopathic PF is believed to involve autoantibodies
d) antiphospholipid antibody syndrome

3. Any 4 investigations?

CBC, Smear. b) Thrombophilia testing: Protein C, S, antithrombin, antiphospholipid antibodies, homocysteine levels, D-dimer.c) Imaging – Doppler flow, CT venography, MRV, d) Cultures of blood, CSF

Heparin IV infusion, LMWH SC for 7 days, monitoring anti Xa activity, antibiotics, antivirals
